ASME SA182 F304H Stainless Steel Forged Ring for Heat Exchanger Application

 

 

ASME SA182 F304H forged ring is a forged austenitic stainless-steel specification for high-temperature heat exchanger structural parts (tubesheets, flanges, channel rings). Grade F304H features a controlled 0.04–0.10% carbon range, giving it significantly higher creep and stress-rupture strength above 540°C compared to standard 304/L grades—critical for long-term operation. Supplied solution-annealed with fine grain size (ASTM 7+), these forged rings undergo ultrasonic and penetrant inspections. They pair excellently with TP321 tubes due to matched thermal expansion but are incompatible with CuNi 70/30 tubes without electrical isolation, as F304H is far more noble in seawater, inducing rapid galvanic corrosion.

 
 

Function of Forged Rings in Heat Exchangers

These are the heavy structural components, not the tubes themselves:

  • Tubesheets: The thick drilled ring/plate that holds the tube bundle (e.g., TP321 tubes). F304H provides the strength to withstand high differential pressure between shell-side and tube-side fluids.

  • Flange Rings: Welded or integral rings at the channel ends for bolting to piping or bonnets.

  • Channel Barrels / Closures: Cylindrical forged sections for high-pressure inlet/outlet headers.

  • Bearing / Support Rings: Internal rings supporting tube bundles or flow distributors.

Specific Requirements for Heat Exchanger Spare Parts (Forged Rings)

When used for tubesheets, flanges, or channel barrels, forged rings must meet these critical requirements:

  • Grain Size: ASME SA182 requires a fine grain size (ASTM No. 7 or finer) for F304H to meet creep design curves. Coarser grains reduce rupture life.

  • Ultrasonic Examination (UT): For hollow forgings (rings) over specific thicknesses, UT is required to detect internal laminations or porosity.

  • Liquid Penetrant Examination (PT): Required for surface defect detection on finished machined surfaces (sealing faces of flanges).

  • Solution Annealing: Must be heated to 1040°C – 1120°C and rapidly quenched (water or rapid air) to put carbides into solution before service.
